Brunswick Town was a port on the Cape Fear River that was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt. It was a familiar practice in colonial times, and the reason there are so many English and European names along the coast. Founder Maurice Moore choose the name as a way to honor George I, the King of England and Duke of Brunswick.
